I had the same problem for years. Now, I come up with profitable systems all of the time. I had to simplify and move to easy-to-trade tickers. It's boring, but it works. Don't guess. Backtest and use statistical analysis to PROVE your edge.
Some people say that backtesting gives no guarantees because the markets are constantly changing. It is true that there are no guarantees, but I would rather trade a system that has shown profitability over the last 30 or 40 years of changing conditions than one that has only proven itself in "today's market".
What are you trying to trade? What time frame? What style do you prefer? What is your risk tolerance? What are your trading goals? What are your roi expectations? It's hard to give you any direction without knowing at least some of these things.
