You just cracked the code, buddy. People are buying large caps like ITC and HDFC like catching a falling knife. And then they are whining on this sub with "Am I cooked?" posts.

Dividends are really high for IOC, ONGC, ITC. If you consider the bonus, split etc you’d be getting your investment amount as dividends after 10 years.

Top 3 stocks has a dividend yield of around 6% . Plus ITC was demerged to give you shares of ITC hotels. Ya but I agree, inspite of all these returns are disappointing.

I'm 26 building a long-term dividend portfolio (70% growth / 30% high yield) with $1k-$2k/month to DRIP. Watchlist: SCHD, VYM, MSFT, PG, O, CVX, JEPI. Also looking at TCS, ITC, PowerGrid from India. If you were starting today, which 3 stocks would you buy first and hold for 10+ years? Not financial advice.

When I turned 21, and wanted to get into investing in the stock market, I started off with the usual - ITC, Tata, Bajaj, etc. I took notice of the Sun Pharma stock, and invested with the basic concept that it is a market leader in India and has growing ambitions in International markets as well. So I invested at a share price of around 530ish. Now, after 5 years, it is touching at almost Rs.2000. Almost 3.68× .
This was during the time when almost all stocks were struggling, almost all businesses were struggling, but Pharma stocks were rallying.
One thing, in my opinion, which is recession proof to some extent is the Pharma sector.
Being in this industry for almost 2 years now, and despite the regulatory and business challenges over this period, it is one of the most resilient industries and is an indispensable part of our everyday lives.
Are there any particular patterns in the stock market, specifically related to the Pharma industry you have observed? Would love to know insights from people who have been in the stock market for a long time

What you will add or remove from these for long term growth. (\~5 yr period)
Will be adding Hindustan Zinc, ITC hotels and Moschip.
Please don't look at numbers. I will be adding more soon.

No. CPUs are considered essential and US will violate a lot of ITC rules in doing so.
I doubt it will go there.
IMO, US is already losing this, they might as well lift all bans. Its not working especially with new Kimi 3 model and it's performance.
It's a losing strategy and sooner or later will be abandoned.

Boring is often misunderstood.
Supply chain automation is boring. Defence is boring. Aerospace is boring. MedTech is boring. Pharma is boring. But "boring" isn't an insult. It's a compliment.
Boring means the predictability of cash flow compounding is higher. It means the business model isn't commoditized. It means the reinvestment runway is more predictable. It means the industry economics allow companies to build durable moats over time.
Semiconductors were boring before the AI explosion. Defence was boring. Infrastructure-like businesses, such as toll booth models, are boring too. A toll booth simply collects tolls. There's nothing exciting about it, but that's often exactly what makes it a great business.
This idea isn't limited to one sector. You can find boring businesses across industries.
At the same time, there are certain pools where the odds of generating attractive long-term returns are structurally stacked against you. That's where the excitement usually is, but not necessarily the shareholder wealth creation.
Take the solar and EV themes as an example. People keep mapping demand and pointing to China. "Look how demand has exploded." But look at what happened to shareholders. Many have been bored to death despite that explosive demand.
I've been tracking China since 2017, so I'm well aware of how these themes have played out.
This is also why "boring" doesn't mean buying companies like ITC or Vedanta.
ITC lacks a meaningful reinvestment engine, which is why it hasn't compounded for long periods. Microsoft also stopped compounding for almost a decade before Azure unlocked a new reinvestment runway.
Compounding ultimately comes down to two variables, **ROIC and the reinvestment runway.**
If either one is missing, long-term compounding becomes extremely difficult.
The solar sector, in my view, lacks that DNA. When the sector itself lacks the structural ability to compound, why bet on it? Yes, volumes will keep growing, but companies have to continuously reinvest enormous amounts of capital just to survive. They are running harder just to stay in the same place.
Compare that with a boring toll booth model. It keeps collecting cash, requires relatively little incremental capital, earns a very high ROIC, and can reinvest at attractive rates for long periods. That is what I mean when I say "boring."
Even energy can be a boring and attractive investment. The key is to focus on the supply chain of the energy ecosystem. Focus on high-margin, moat-driven businesses that benefit from the ecosystem rather than the solar manufacturers themselves, where the industry's DNA is often hostile to long-term compounding.
If you had invested in many of the Chinese solar leaders during what looked like the early stages of their compounding journey, the outcome has been brutal. I can name several of them today that are trading at single-digit P/E multiples after destroying enormous amounts of shareholder value.
Demand growth alone does not create shareholder returns. Industry economics do.

Dividends = Profit sharing, but high dividend ≠ good stock.
(BUY if):Consistent 7-10 yrs payout, 2-6% yield, low debt, payout ratio <75% (Ex: ITC, Infosys, PowerGrid).
(AVOID )if: Super high 10%+ yield (yield trap), one-time payout, high debt, no growth.
Ups & downs are normal. Check yearly trend, not monthly. Reinvest dividends to compound.

What are boring industries according to you which could be attractive? Most people who say this invest in ITC or Vedanta - which I disagree a bit.

Please check the face value of ITC. Dividend is calculated as per the face value of the share. As long as I not missing out on any other details the math checks out

ITC is one of biggest FMCG company in India, versatile business segments. Paying consistent dividend on face value. A big opportunity as of now at lower price due to impact of excise duty.
