With possibly a new bull waiting in Q4 / '27 Q1, a reminder to myself. If the story below speaks to you, a reminder to yourself too:
I bought my first crypto in 2017 and made kinda bank by thinking: Bitcoin pumped, is there something that's lagging and will pump next? The talented trader that I am, I looked at CoinMarketCap and bought the coin that was second in market cap. It was $XRP. The coin did a 10x overnight and I felt like the biggest genius (I wasn't, as I didn't sell, and by 2019 my portfolio was down 80%).
After that, still not being a good trader (or shitcoiner, for that matter), I kept looking for the coin that hadn't pumped yet because I kept missing THE ONE that had.
Doge pumped? Better buy some Doge derivative.
Ethereum pumped? Better buy some ETH DeFi (governance) tokens.
ZEC pumped? Better buy that super new protocol nobody has heard of that will obv. 100x.
A specific NFT collection pumped? Better buy the 1000th iteration of the same underlying aesthetic.
DEX coins pumped? Better buy... you know the drill.
The chasing of betas gave me 10-20x portfolio swings from 2017 till 2022. Needless to say, I always ended up at break-even or below.
In 2023 I finally understood that I'm not cut out to find what's pumping in the first place, nor to find the actual betas that might work, and then also sell those coins.
So instead of chasing the beta, I started putting stuff on my watchlist and waited for the first sell-off. Goal: buy after the pump and speculate on a second and sometimes even third pump. Over time, you start to learn what bottomed-out charts *can* look like.
With a hit rate of around 60-70%, I managed to actually become profitable. My PF swings haven't been as high anymore but at least I began making money while reducing stress + screen time.
So for the coming bull, and with the first new shiny things appearing on the horizon, I'll remember the following:
* Hyperliquid pumped the most in this recent bear, so whenever attention goes back to DEXes, I'll look at the $HYPE chart and buy whenever I feel the chart looks good, and size up.
* The Solana ecosystem is a hot and fucked up mess. But it works, has volume, and "onboards" the most people. So whenever I feel like Solana is where the magic happens, I'll just size up on $SOL. Maybe some blue-chip memes like $BONK, $FARTCOIN, or even $USELESS. But heavily chart-dependent.
* Robinhood Chain will definitely be the center of attention. It's already replicating a huge downside of the Solana ecosystem: total dilution of everything. So instead of trying to buy all the hottest stuff and getting rinsed, I'll just buy $CASHCAT which is undoubtedly THE meme blue chip (already listed on the RH app).
* For privacy: $ZEC for size, and maybe some smaller MC coin whose chart proves it survived the past 12+ months. $NOCK could be a candidate.
* For AI: hard to say, as this sector has seen the most innovation (i.e. change) over the past 2+ years, which means coins get old + dumped pretty fast. The shiniest thing a few years ago is just lame today. $TAO, $NEAR, and possibly $VVV will form some sort of basket.
I'll stay the fuck out of everything else because I'm 100% sure I'll get burned immediately.
But I'll also stay alert and not become complacent, as old coins can get outperformed by new stuff at any time.
Good luck all!
