Avoiding all the nonsense that went on before MMTLP was halted and just concentrating on the U3 halt itself, which is the cause of so much ape pain...
MMTLP was a stock spinoff from Meta Materials. At some point the execs decided to take the company private and rebrand as Nextbridge Hydrocarbons (they were an oil&gas company that I believe never got a single drop of oil out of the ground).
So what? Is that it? Who cares?
Well, when a stock goes private, apes believe that forces all shorts to close. Sound familiar?
The company said its last day of trading was December 12, 2022, a Monday, and Nextbridge Hydrocarbons shares, private, would be distributed on December 13th, 2022, to all shareholders.
Apes were so super-excited. That's MOASS day, when all shorts have to close! Apes kept telling each other not to sell, not a single share, not even think about selling, before December 12th, 2022 had come. Shorts *had* to close! They *had* to!
Unfortunately, the MMTLP execs stupidly did not allow for the (at the time) 2-day SEC settlement period, they believed they could stop the trading at end of day Monday, 12/12/22.
The SEC and FINRA realized that there can be no possible settlement if MMTLP shares disappeared to be 'instantly replaced' by Nextbridge shares and instituted an 'extraordinary halt', called a U3 halt, on the MMTLP shares on Thursday December 8th, 2022. If they hadn't done that, any trades made on December 9th or December 12th would have not had adequate time of the full 2-day settlement and since MMTLP wasn't just changing its ticker but disappearing from all public markets at end of day on the 12th, the 9th and 12th *couldn't* be days when MMTLP was allowed to trade.
So they halted it.
Apes were fucked. They all had previously decided to wait until a millisecond before close on the 12th to finally sell, expecting shorts to be rabidly trying to buy every last share.
That's it, really. Oh, there's more - a woman in a pigeon costume, 'KNOW WHAT YOU HOLD', lots of anger and teeth-gnashing and all that, a skeevy SEC filing from the execs demanding that all shareholders DRS their Nextbridge shares, etc etc. But that's not the important part.
The important part, as always, is that everyone in meltdown knew exactly what was going to happen, and the meltdowns were and still are glorious when it played out exactly that way.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU THINK THIS STORY IS TRUE OR FALSE:
Last year I (6'4 235 lb Indian Male in blue shirt and jeans) went out to a speakeasy and saw a beautiful woman (5'7 probably 130 lbs, British woman in a black dress, black heels, black nail polish, I was 27 and she was probably 10-15 years older than me but she was one of those women who only look more beautiful as they age.
The thing is she was there with her husband/boyfriend (British, 5'8 probably 165 lbs and wearing a full suit).
For whatever reason I decided I didn't care and stepped in between them to put my hand on the woman's shoulder, fully expecting her to push me off or the guy to push me. They were walking in a circle to the music with a bit of a gap between them and I thought to myself "You have the best looking woman in the building with you and this is what you're doing?".
Well instead the woman just put her hand up behind her shoulder and had me hold it while we walked in a circle instead. The guy just stood there furious and when I went to sit down he started making gestures at me but I just pretended like I was blind and didn't even look at him so he started complaining to my cousin's cousin (I went to the speakeasy with my brother, my cousin's cousin, and my cousin, while on vacation in Hitchin UK from Canada) .
After 30 seconds of holding hands and walking in a circle I go to sit down on a nearby table. 2 minutes pass by and the woman with her husband/bf walks past our table. Before passing by I see her smiling, and then she proceeds to take out her hair band to drop her hair, and she does the most exaggerated hair flip right in my face. She basically let all of her down to reveal her neck, and then flipped it to the side using her entire body/hips. I looked over to my cousin's cousin and my cousin and even they looked shocked. This caused me to lose it and jump up, just to hug her from behind. She almost fell over when I hugged her from behind but luckily I was able to hold her and keep her upright.
At this point the guy furiously complained to my cousin's cousin and my cousin's cousin is on damage control.
I decide to chill for a second and sit down, during that time I can tell my cousin's cousin is getting anxious and wants to leave so I reluctantly agree. Before leaving though I put one hand out to the woman so she comes and then I kiss her hand. She tells me "you're very cute" while smiling but I end up leaving because of my friends but not before saying "thank you", which is the only words I spoke to her. On the way out my brother, my cousin's cousin, and my cousin shake the guy's hand, so I do too.
