Abysmal performance, why even consider them when there are so many better options?

High yield you seek? I like XCCC, better than HYGW I think. More stable. 13% yield.

I think the question is what is the goal. If the goal is yield hungry, you could go into SPYI which is mostly qualified dividends so potentially better tax treatment. Has a better yield, has no NAV erosion to date and has been around about as long.
If your goal is bond exposure specifically to mitigate market shifts then they are experiencing an awful lot of NAV erosion for how stable bonds have been. This is looking more like bad execution of Covered Calls from my first look at HYGW. Large portion isn't even classified as ROC, it seems to be full taxable.
Don't chase Yield %, you want to chase total yield over the life of the investment. Yield hungry people get confused because they follow the displayed dividend yield, but if the NAV shrinks and the price falls but dividend stays the face value yield keeps getting bigger, while you keep losing money.
Price = 10.00, dividend $1.00 -> Yield = 10%
Price = 9.00, dividend $1.00 -> Yield = 11.1%
Yield looks higher, but your actual gains across the life of it haven't increased AT ALL. You aren't actually getting 1.1% more if you bought it at $10.00. This is why yield %'s as a snapshot are VERY deceiving. So now you lost 10% of your investment and gained 10%, but if you look at just the direct yield and calculate you THINK you would be up 1.1%. When you buy and how the dividends actual value is relative to current price can start a trend that makes yield look bigger and bigger, but you're actually losing over and over.
