I'm 69 and living off my investments of roughly $700k. I was doing self directed with Scotia iTrade, left that when they changed their interface, went to a managed account with RBC DS Wealth Management for the last year, and am just moving to RBC DI to do self directed again.
I would not recommend the wealth management services of any of the banks as I find that they are too expensive, Sure use them, or a fee based financial planner for investment ideas, what to keep in a RRSP/RRIF vs margin, vs TFSA but not for everyday management.
You should be able to pick 4 to 10 broad based ETFs that produce a good yield and let your mother just ride that off into the sunset along with her CPP/OAS.
Personally I am doing the Hamilton "MAX" ETfs, so EMAX for energy QMAX for U.S. tech, SMAX for U.S. equities, UMAX for utilities, HMAX for Canadian Financials, HDIV for general dividend producers. Once I free up some additional funds I will expand to FMAX, LMAX, RMAX, and AMAX if gold ever comes down a little. I currently have some other stocks such as BK, FTN, RS, BRK-B and will slowly get out of those and into the above.
I figure that I can buy and sell shares of each to change the weighting of my portfolio while enjoying the high dividends. It might not be the best route for everyone but it's a plan.
