Half of XEG is literally Suncor and CNQ... just buy those and save the management fee

You're too late, I wouldnt buy now. If you really want long term oil investment, wait for the oil prices to crash, then buy. And I wouldn't buy an index, I'd specifically look at SU, CNQ and CVE who are still likely to turn a profit after the prices drop, and most likely to recover after the initial shock.
That said, I think HPS.A is a much better play on electrification rather than energy today.

I'm hoping to find something close to a bottom, maybe early next year and if I could hold for a year and get a 15% price move plus divs, I'd be happy with that. I don't need big gains. I hate buying things at ATH prices. My normal stocks are (BN, CNQ) are all too high for my comfort level.
