That thread, however, devolved into a flamewar about whether big cities are worth the diminished income, which is not my goal.
For attendings who know about the NYC (or NYC-area, like northern NJ or long island or Westchester) job market for their field: which specialties have an easy time getting a job? Are there any specialties that make close to MGMA median (or potentially above)?
From my friends who are in residency, I have heard that anesthesia, psych, and vascular surgery have both job availability as well as relatively high pay compared to their own MGMA medians (i.e., anesthesiologists don't take too much of an NYC-salary-decrease). Is that true? Are there other specialties like that? On the other hand, I have heard that it is challenging to get an interventional radiology and PM&R job if you want to live in the big apple. Is that true?

If you think successful private practice doctors in the US are getting paid at the 50th percentile of MGMA data (which is complete garbage used by hospitals to underpay employees), you are likely intentionally being ignorant.
If you are planning to be a business owner in the US in a surgical subspecialty, your expected income should far exceed that of your Canadian counterparts.
