Yes, the primary economic pain is to China. Trump will probably later claim that he was negotiating something there simultaneously on multiple fronts and achieved something in his mind.
Trump's announcement that he will escort the tankers was a lie... we don't send our $10billion warships in range of $10k missiles/mines/boats/shore after USS COLE.
If Iran wants economic damage to US then they would just start blowing up the tankers (US aren't really going to insure them or escort them no matter what Trump says). But instead Iran have been hitting bases and embassies in neighboring states which seems more like political messaging than economic.
Hopefully Iran won't pursue state sponsored terrorism as an asymetric threat. It is kind of awkward that the US Secretary of "War" was the first to say US would be "unbound by "stupid rules of engagement," and undeterred by "what so-called international institutions say."
China/Taiwan is not for now its for the distant future. They are patient and plan ahead long term. More likely Trump would go after some other America's/Caribean resource country before China goes after Taiwan.
