It’s admirable what you’re trying to teach him. You have a few options…
1. Show him a time value of money calculator. Research average COGR of the stock market (9.5%), current HYSA rates (4.0%), a Chase savings account (0.2%), and a wallet.
Show him what $1,000 does in each of those scenarios for 50 years.
Explain the rule of 72…72 divided by annual return gives you a rough estimate of how long it takes to double your money.
Show him how much he needs to retire with $5million if he starts now vs in 20 years.
If none of that works…
Option 2: offer to “match” contributions he makes to a savings account into a separate investment account. Free money might entice him to get started.
Options 3: accept that a teenager isn’t worried about retirement and just start saving for him and have the conversation again in 9 years.
I started savings for my kids where they were born (because those extra 16 years also make a big difference on the backend). They are 12,10,8 and average about $600/$500/$500 each month respectively. The goal is to tell them about this in their 30s so that they know their retirement is basically funded.
