BLUF: Looking for investment suggestions for my baby and for myself. (Baby is 7-months-old, I’m 29.)
Hi all,
I have a 7-month-old baby and would like to start investing for him. However, I’m not very familiar with investing and whatnot so I’m not sure what the best approach to this is. My husband and I talked about opening a fidelity account under my husband’s name, then transferring the money earned to our son when he’s in a space where we feel he’s ready to handle it responsibly. I’ve looked into a UTMA account for him, but not too sure how I feel about it having to be transferred to him once he turns 21.
What ETFs would you all suggest we go with for him? I’ve got about $1110 right now, and will be investing a minimum of $100/month plus birthday money, holiday money, etc.
I did a little bit of investing a few years ago, but am recently wanting to get back into it to plan for retirement. For my personal fidelity account, I was thinking of potentially going with some combination of SCHG, VGT, VXUS, VT, and VTI. (Not concrete, still very much learning about the differences of each one and investing overall.) Just not sure if I should use those for him or not as well.
Please forgive me if this post sounds extremely uneducated, just trying to navigate how to put my son in the best position I can. Thanks so much!
Edited to add: not really interested in a 529 as I am a veteran and my son‘s college tuition will be paid for. When I was active duty, I invested about $20,000 into my TSP, but I am not working currently because I stay home with our son.
