I am a G6 Step 10 staff member at the UN in New York. I am 42 and I’ve hit 18 years of service. I am planning to separate in February 2027 (at 19 years of service / age 43).
The Logic: I am currently "paying to work." My salary is $109k, but after NYC/Federal taxes and $55k in annual NYC childcare for two kids, my net take-home pay is essentially negligible. My husband earns $600k+, so my income is taxed at our highest marginal rate (\\\~45%).
Status: 18 years of pension contributory service.
The Plan: Take the Article 31 Withdrawal Settlemen
The Math: Since I have >15 years of service, I get my contributions + interest plus a 100% match.
Projected Payout: \\\~$320,000.
The Strategy: I plan to roll that $320k into an S&P 500 IRA. At a 10.5% average annual return, that grows to $1.9M by age 60. If I stay at the UN until 65, I get a \\\~$6,500/month pension, but I lose the $1.9M capital asset (which is inheritable for my kids) and I will have spent over $1M in childcare and commuting costs to "earn" that pension.
Questions for the Experts:
The 20-Year Milestone: Is there any structural reason to stay for year 20? As far as I can tell, the Article 31 match maxes out at year 15.
The ASHI Risk: Taking the settlement kills ASHI eligibility. With a spouse making $600k in corporate NYC, his PPO insurance is top-tier. Am I crazy for walking away from ASHI for a $320k lump sum that has 18 years to grow?
The G-Staff Reality: Most UN pension advice is for P-staff. As a G6, does the market growth of a $320k settlement outperform the annuity in a high-tax, high-cost-of-living environment like NYC?
Looking for a cold math check. Does the "Freedom Fund" beat the "Golden Handcuffs"?
