Tell him that you respect his decision and believe in his potential, but part of you is naturally worried about what happens if things don't go as planned.
The most objective way to clear those doubts is to see his P&L (Profit n loss statement) performance over at least a 365day period to gauge his consistency. If he doesn't have that track record yet, your concerns are completely valid.
If he can't provide his P&L statement in the exchange he trades at ( or makes excuses) , but you want to remain respectful while getting your point across, suggest a compromise: ask him to clear all three levels of the CMT examination while keeping his regular job to accumulate capital. Based on your description, he sounds like he is in the beginner stage. It typically takes a year(sometimes four or more) just to close a year profitable and beat the standard index.
The harsh reality is that a large chunk of people(99%) quit or go bankrupt before they ever find their edge. Trading is marketed as freedom and quick money, but it is actually a highly repetitive job (very boring, deciplined) and incredibly stressful when your daily or monthly expsnses depends on it.
