It's a weird feeling when you know something works but can't fully articulate why. The discretionary part is like a muscle memory you've built from staring at charts, your brain picks up on subtle context that you haven't explicitly defined yet

One thing that helped a friend of mine was recording voice notes during each replay session, just rambling about why they took a trade or passed on it. After a week they played them back and started noticing phrases they kept repeating about market texture, stuff like "this pullback feels sluggish" or "volume died on that push." Gave them a starting point to quantify those gut feelings

Since your models aren't picking up the pattern maybe the key feature is something temporal that you're subconsciously tracking, like the sequence of bar closes relative to volume rather than static OHLC values. The 30 bar chop assessment you mentioned sounds like a rolling market state classifier your brain is running in the background

For the stop placement inconsistency you could try codifying a decision tree rather than a single formula, if ATR is above X and price is within Y of a swing low then use that low, otherwise default to a volatility based stop. Simplifies the branching logic you're already doing in your head without needing a neural net to figure it out
