I’d probably avoid this purchase OP, the XRF doesn’t lie

I held my XRF up to the screen. Says it's mostly aluminum and silica, trace amounts of various other metals like selenium. Sorry OP.

Definitely looks like gold. But if you can I would ask for higher quality closer pictures of the sides to get a better idea of what the scratches look like.
Either way, it could be gold filled or solid, if it is indeed gold.
Ive boughten a lot of gold jewelry online based on pictures. If it’s inexpensive enough, it may be worth the risk of it not being solid gold.
Though, the high majority of gold jewelry is marked, and has been for a long time, there is unmarked gold jewelry. I’ve seen some very well crafted, heavy, 14k pieces that were unmarked.
If you bought this could you test and return if a fake? Or would you be picking it up in person via Marketplace and could test it then? Either way, an acid test or XRF is your best bet.
Based on the pictures, definitely looks like gold. And Ive boughten a lot of gold based on pictures. Hasn’t done me wrong yet. But don’t take my opinion as fact, a test is the only way to really know.

Someone else said both and that is what I would say, only because of your plans to mess with jewelry and refining which require the XRF to show you precisely what you have versus the Sigma which will verify what you tell it the sample is.
The bullion coins and bars? Sigma is superior, and as stated by someone else, go for the Investor or Pro to get the through-testing feature. You tell it what you should have, and it verifies it.

Italian Goldsmith here. Husband called it right on this one!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your husband is 100% correct, this is a fake / gold-plated copper-brass piece.
Here are the clear giveaway signs:
Hallmarks & Italian Law: If this were authentic Italian solid gold, it would mandatory carry proper Italian hallmarks by law: an oval stamp for the fineness (like 585 for 14K or 750 for 18K) alongside a polygon maker's mark containing the factory number and province code (e.g., <123 RM>).
A random, crooked "14K ITALY" font crudely stamped onto a generic end-tab is a classic sign of cheap base-metal jewelry made overseas (often India/China) targeting tourists or the US market.
Base Metal Showing Through: Look closely at the inner curves of the herringbone/snake chain and along the edges—you can clearly see the thin gold flash plating rubbing off, revealing the darker, greenish-copper/brass base metal underneath. Solid 14K gold doesn't wear off to reveal dark base metals.
Hardware Quality: The end tabs, jump rings, and lobster clasp show rough tolerances and uneven finish typical of mass-produced fashion jewelry.
If you take it to a jeweler for an acid test or XRF scan, it'll confirm immediately that it's just plated copper/brass.
If you want true Italian craftsmanship, shop on Etsy. The quality will reward you.

Leave it as is and get it XRF tested. I think it looks cool and would leave it as is even if tests as gold

If you have the funds for an XRF that is what I would get. Sigma can’t test jewelry as far as I know, and isn’t always perfect at testing home refine/pours.

Sigma you have to have the settings correct and the Sigma basically gives a yes or no but can have some problems/inaccuracies. XRF will tell you exactly what is in anything but can be tricked by thick plating as it doesn't go very deep. Based on what your are doing, a XRF would seem better. But have you looked at the prices on XRFs? They are very expensive.

They vary a good bit based on time period, but generally speaking the 2 Bu and 2 She are 20% or greater gold and \~80% silver (electrum), the 1 Bu and 1 She are usually \~95% silver.
I can't tell if that last part was a barb or not, but I did check with the Mods before posting this and they confirmed these coins were okay for the sub.
Let me know if you are interested in buying and I can provide weights, measurements, XRF readings, and my estimate on time period/subtype.
Happy stacking!

Lost a couple coins to a good home since the last post; reposting what I have left!
**I am offering a complete set (1 Bu, 1 Shu, 2 Shu, 2 Bu) of 4 Japanese Edo Period coins (aka “Samurai” coins) with CHOICES.**
The [PROOF](https://imgur.com/a/KAiFBj6) photo here is laid out in a grid with 4 columns and 4 rows (with a few coins missing). You can choose one complete set by indicating which from each column you would like. My personal choice from the remaining would be A1, A2, A3, A4!
I only have one 1 Shu coin, so unfortunately I can only sell one complete set. Once it is sold I will discuss selling individual coins or make a separate post for them.
Price is **$519 shipped** for **all 4 coins of your choice.** I am open to reasonable trades at comparable melt value in gold and/or silver.
Note that all coins were acquired from reputable sellers on PMs or reputable coin shops. They have also been analyzed with XRF to get a general estimate on fineness and composition. I am happy to provide that information in chat as well as my best estimate for time period and subtype of coin—I am not an expert so any info provided is strictly my amateur opinion.
The 2 Shu coins are all the larger (\~1.65 gram), earlier types.

I will ship same or next business day and I am open to shipping first to established buyers with high SELLER flair or using a MM at buyers expense. I accept payment via Venmo and Zelle and could probably arrange others if needed.
Thanks and see y'all in chat!

Take it to a coin dealer to “sell” and have them use their XRF, if it’s real gold, they’ll offer slightly under melt value. Just tell them you wanted more, and move on. If it’s fake, well, they’ll let you know.

Yes, both tested on a scan gun(XRF is what I think they called it?) came out as 99% fine silver but kinda tarnished, they said don’t clean the bars. Both also from the 80s so yay vintage

You can just do a quick google search and see what it is. Or even check with ChatGPT or Claude. Looks like 1 oz PAMP Diwali from 2024. As for authenticity, not easy to determine from the pics alone. You’ll need to bring it to a store that has XRF to test it out. Current spot price is around $4K.

Yeah, I'm not sure what happened there. I told them that they coins are 100% counterfeit (Sigma and XRF tested) and could provide images/video of the tests. I was still told to return them if I wanted a refund.
Probably just terrible Ebay support being terrible as expected. But I got my money back so I was made whole.

Acid tests are destructive and since you're damaging the piece you have the option to remove more than the outer layer of gold (to prove that it's brass or silver underneath). That layer is between 0.5 and 50 microns thick. XRF can determine the contents of the first 30-50 microns, and if I'm the gold layer is thicker, it'll show up as solid gold (or a karat alloy).
