SCHD is up while VTI is down

Its definitely a good diversifier especially since youre so exposed to the AI capex in something like VOO or VTI. but adding in something like SPMO makes no sense. Its just more of the same exposure at the top. GDE is just more s&p 500 exposure with some gold added in. Just invest in the gold through something clean like GLD/GLDM. XMMO im not a fan of. There's cheaper ways to get mid cap growth stock exposure with similar returns.

VT’s performance over time has seriously trailed VOO and even VTI. VT is meant to give you diversity to take advantage of gains happening outside the US, not only as a hedge against a drop in the US economy. But you should keep a couple things in mind, in my opinion. The American environment is much friendlier to businesses in general. And many large American companies have significant international presence. So if positive trends are happening abroad, VTI and VOO can still pick them up. But VT is full of a lot of international stocks that don’t do well, or as well as American stocks simply because they’re not in as friendly of a business environment.
So in my opinion, the drop in overall performance you get for VT is an expensive price to pay for diversification. I think VOO and VTI are perfectly fine choices.

5 years ago I was invested only in VTI, VOO, and VEA with one small position in GOOG and on my way to financial freedom. Now I'm leveraged to hell, selling covered calls and puts, have 15% of my portfolio in NVDA, and my only motivation in life is to piss off smug Bogleheads.

Hello, so I am brand new to investing. My friend recently recommended I buy these 3 stocks XUU VTI XEQT. What would you recommend the percentage breakdown be that I invest into each stock? Hope that makes sense. Thanks

VT is easy because it is a single low cost ETF which gives you pretty much the entire world's market and is already split between US and international markets.
Some people love it for this simplicity. Other's prefer not to because they think VT has too much international.
If you have high conviction about the AI or tech side, then buy something like VTI (US market) or VOO and add in some VGT (tech) or SPMO (momentum based fund) and some VXUS for some international exposure (if you want it).

Hold SCHD if you are holding VTI or VOO? none of the top 10 holding of SCHD are tech. It gives you true diversification away from the ai bubble
So something like this would work
VT - 30%
SCHD - 25%
AVUV - 10%
XMMO - 10%
SPMO - 15%
GDE - 10%
a little bit of AVDV joining in does it all

If I’m reading this right, I’d flip this. I’d put the TDF in your 401k and put VT or VTI+VXUS or VOO+VXF+VXUS (they are equivalent in the right percentages) in your Roth IRA.
The reasoning is you put your most “aggressive” funds in the Roth because they have the most growth potential and therefore have the best chance to provide you with the most tax-free income. The general investment guidance being Roth is where your equities go and traditional is where your fixed income/TDFs/Fixed allocation funds go.

Lots of overlap.
FXAIX is inside VTI. FSKAX and VTI covers the entire US.
I'd probably consolidate as many of my accounts as I could. I personally wouldn't want to pay an advisor fee for what I could essentially get by just buying VTI/VXUS (or their equivalents) you should research this so you don't continue overlapping. A lot of the popular funds mentioned are just variations of the same thing. FXAIX=VOO=SWPPX=SPYM etc etc.
The more holdings you have, the more tickers you see...it doesn't mean you're more diversified. You gotta think about what's inside the funds. There's a good chart for building an effective and simple boglehead approved portfolio, lemme grab it.

I like this chart by u/apollosmith which highlights the funds necessary to construct a comprehensive and well diversified portfolio.

Maybe this will help you sort out some of the overlap you’re staring down.
VT = Total World Stock ETF
VTI = Total US Stock ETF
VOO = US S&P 500 Stock ETF
VXUS = Total International Stock ETF
VXF = US Extended Market Stock ETF, ie everything not in the S&P 500, eg US small/mid cap stocks
VBR = Vanguard Small Cap
VSS = Vanguard FTSE All-World ex-US Small-Cap ETF
Zero overlap between VOO, VXF and VXUS
VTI contains 100% of VOO and VBR
VXUS contains 100% of VSS
VT=VTI+VXUS
VTI=VOO+VXF
If you want to invest in the whole world, you can do either 1) 100% VT, or 2) 65% VTI + 35% VXUS or 3) 52% VOO + 13% VXF + 35% VXUS or pick your poison on how you want to weight US large, small/mid cap and international stocks. So ends the Vanguard investment math lesson of the day.
This site can help with sniffing out ETF overlap.

If the goal is aiming 1% monthly return, I would rather go and have it in S&P or with ETF that beats S&P such as VTI and VOO. That is perhaps a base to equal or win over S&P but lots of work and fears getting into trading. I think best approach is to do a two split approach on your capital. Use a big portion into ETF on indexes and have a small portion doing the trading you intend to do such as 80% ETF, 10% on fixed income like treasuries and 10% on trading. While I was still working, I did the experiment of 50:50 between ETF/Mutual Fund and my own stocks and option trading. That experiment doesn't last long in less than 2 years, my average came out much ahead of index. From then on, I flip to 80%+ in stocks, options and futures. Not all make money.
Aiming at 1% monthly is a great start but you need to test it with a conservative portfolio management and not let the 1% to have drawdowns.
For decent setup, I wrote many trading bots and free tools. One of them helps to find the top leading stocks in S&P and Nasdaq based on triple screen, ema, trending slope compared to S&P and Nasdaq and few trend following and momentum oscillators.

For your Roth IRA, contrary to what it might seem from reading reddit, there is no one perfect asset allocation and everything else is wrong. You could certainly make a case for the portfolio you have. But the fact you are at Fidelity and have only Vanguard ETFs shows the effects of the Vanguard echo chamber and hive mind on reddit. Vanguard ETFs (VOO, VTI, VT, VXUS, etc.) are constantly spammed on reddit so people think they *have* to buy them or they won't be cool or something.
If I had a Roth IRA at Fidelity I would take advantage of Fidelity's ZERO mutual funds with 0.00% expense ratios and have something like 70% FZROX and 30% FZILX.

Hello!
I'm in my late 20s and am currently making in the range of $80k-$90k a year (though I am hoping to make a career change soon which may impact this) and wanted to get some advice on my current investing portfolio. I'm definitely a fairly conservative investor and prefer just being able to set and forget but I do want to make sure I'm being efficient and diversified where it makes sense. I have some legacy accounts and am unsure how to adjust (mostly referring to Edward Jones but also some of my Fidelity investments).
My main questions across all accounts are: Do I have any blind spots? What should I invest in going forward based on what I have (continue to just put into FXAIX or VTI)? Any adjustments I should make to these accounts or are they fine as is? And what should I do about EJ? I will say that EJ really helped me when I first started since I was super anxious but now I am more confident and essentially have just left the money I invested there (I have a very low advisor fee which is nice).
I would eventually like to own a condo/house in the next 5 or so years and, if possible, retire a bit younger (but likely move to more of a "passion job"). I also plan to eventually get married and have a kid.
Here is what I have:
401k: $80k-$85k (Based on a 2060 retirement across 2 accounts (one with former employer and one with current), I put 10% of my paycheck (+ employer match) into this with a 50/50 traditional/roth split).
HYSA: $20k-$25k
Fidelity: $100k-$110k (30% in FELC, 10% in FMCSX, 10% in FSSNX, 45% in FXAIX, and 5% in VTI). Over the past 1-2 years, I have only been investing in FXAIX and VTI, the other positions are legacy positions that I had before and have just let sit.
Traditional IRA: $10k all in FSKAX
HSA (through work): $3k currently and putting in $4k next year (invested in an S&P fund).
Edward Jones: $40k-$45k (1% in Cash, 20% in Income (HIMFX, MPHQX, MEDHX), 60% in Large Cap (AMZN, AEP, AVGO, MSFT, HDV, FEUPX, and FDTRX), 16% in Small & Mid cap (CRWV, BMGKX, and MNDKX), 3% in aggressive (GLD)). 9.04% of this portfolio is in international.
Thank you so much! Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

First find out your monthly expenses for a year. Divide it in half and save that amount to a HYSA. I use Ally but you can choose anything. If you’re working contribute to a 401k upto company match. Open a ROTH IRA and try to contribute monthly with the goal of maxing it out every year. If you still have money left go back and contribute to 401k. Open a health savings account and invest that money also. If doing all that and you still have extra money open a regular brokerage account and contribute. I will recommend setting your investing on automatic in a low cost index fund such as VTI or VOO.

SOXQ beta 2.5, I want to get 10k into it. If it performs like usual, my investment will double in 4 years. I will leave it alone until I get to 60. After that I will DCA into VTI or SCHB.

For my ROTH I am on Fidelity but I am invested in VTI and VXUS, but I feel I am still early enough to swap it into FZROX and FZILX for the future.

>But for my brokerage I plan to continue VTI and VXUS.
Why? Because you "heard" that "mutual funds are not as tax efficient as ETFs in a taxable account"? That is out of date misinformation that is unfortunately widespread on reddit.
The last year FZROX distributed taxable capital gains was 2021. FZILX has *never* distributed taxable capital gains. In 2026 there is no difference in "tax efficiency" between the mutual funds FZROX and FZILX and the ETFs VTI and VXUS in a taxable account. And both FZROX and FZILX have lower expense ratios (0.00%) than VTI (0.03%) and VXUS (0.05%).

Hello everyone! I wanted some advice on my investments for my ROTH, brokerage and my HYSA.
Currently I am on the Fidelity platform for my ROTH and brokerage. My ROTH is 65% VXUS, 20% VTI and 15% QQQM. And my brokerage is 60% VXUS and 40% VTI. I plan on removing the QQQM investments going forward and to put it back into the main investments. I also am considering FZROX and FZILX instead of VTI and VXUS. But for my brokerage I plan to continue VTI and VXUS. Let me know about any advice to consider for these two.
My HYSA is with Citizens but I want to change it for one with a better APY, and would love suggestions!
Thank you any and all advice is appreciated!

You’re buying a lot of the same stuff. Just do VT or VTI/VXUS. Way simpler and you don’t have to think about it
sentiment 0.000
VT has a higher expense ratio than the combination of VTI and VXUS. So there is basically no scenario where it could outperform. Also, when using a taxable brokerage it is better to have VTI+VXUS for US citizens because of the foreign tax credit on VXUS.

I do a gold ETF. GLDM. Instead of physical gold. Maybe you could do 80% into VOO or VTI, and 20% into GLDM.

We're 51/55
Our portfolio is 70/20/5
Equities are 75% VTI & 25% VXUS
The bonds are in the short/mid and tip towards US treasury, but also some investment grade corporates.
Total portfolio @ 8M, we are fully retired and debt tree.
Hope that helps. How aggressive we each want to be is purely personal.
