Toyota still uses
BlackBerry QNX, but its role has shifted from being the "face" of the car to being the "brains" behind the scenes.
While Toyota moved its main infotainment screens (Entune 3.0 and newer) to Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) starting in 2018, it continues to use QNX for functions that require high levels of safety and reliability.
Where QNX is still found in Toyotas:
Safety-Critical Systems: QNX is a "Real-Time Operating System" (RTOS), meaning it is guaranteed to process data within strict time limits. This makes it the preferred choice for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), like lane-keeping and emergency braking, where a system lag or crash isn't just annoying—it’s dangerous.
Instrument Clusters: In many models, the digital dashboard that shows your speed and warning lights still runs on QNX. This ensures that even if your Linux-based infotainment screen freezes or reboots, your critical driving information remains visible and active.
Telematics: The hardware that handles "behind-the-scenes" communication, like emergency SOS calls and remote diagnostics, often relies on QNX for its hardened security and stability.
The "Mixed" Approach
Toyota currently uses a multi-OS strategy. Think of it like a house: Linux is the wallpaper and entertainment system (it's pretty and customizable), while QNX is the electrical wiring and plumbing (it's hidden, but it must work perfectly 100% of the time).
As of late 2025, Toyota is listed as one of the major automakers that remains a key partner for QNX as they transition toward "software-defined vehicles".
