Why can you only buy UCITS ETFs? I expect the US withholding tax will be 15% as for most European countries on US dividends (except LPs, which is 30%).
The 15% WHT is taken at source in US but you should be able to offset it against your Spanish tax bills.
There are no UCITS dividend ETFs that get anywhere close to quality of US ones and especially the consistency in both dividend growth and capital growth.
I am European and have SCHD as my core dividend ETF. If anyone can find a UCITS ETF that has the same track record of raising its dividend by 7-10% every year and also has a quality lens to select strong global businesses that deliver capital growth as well I’d love to know about it.
I also have MMLP UCITS, which is the only UCITS ETF for mid-stream. Due to LPs, this UCITS ETF is needed. This gives a decent dividend, dividend growth, and access to a sector which strong cyclical tailwinds. For me, it is how I get most of my energy exposure in my portfolio, along with SCHD, which has significant energy exposure too.
I also have TRY properties trust ETF which gives a reasonable dividend and access to pan - European REITS.
The European and global markets are so small compared to the US, if you want dividend exposure you’d be better off picking individual stocks or just buying the index of markets that are strongly dividend focused - I for example DCA the FTSE 100 every month. I can’t see why I’d pay for a dividend ETF and lose money on expenses and long term capital growth when I can just buy the whole market for near zero cost and get a decent dividend and better long term growth. UK has zero WHT - other countries in Europe have high taxes but maybe within EU you are exempt (you’d need to check).
I don’t have many individual dividend picks. BTI is by far my biggest one as it ticked most of my boxes - huge dividend at the time, massive profitability and cash, grossly undervalued, solid dividend growth, and strong signs of turnaround that would lead to P/E reversion. BTI is still probably a decent pick. I also have LGEN and SDLP to boost the yield and they have also done very well in capital growth this year.
For a pure dividend machine and for monthly cash flow it’s very hard to beat O.
But SCHD is the core pillar.
With 200k, I’d consider:
\- 100k SCHD
\- 25k MMLP UCITS
\- 25k TRY
\- 25k O
\- 25k individual picks to boost yield
