Fair enough, I get why you'd think that, most of those "I tested everything" posts are junk. So here's what I actually ran for trend.
Crypto, 1h and 4h bars, 18-23 coins, 0.2% per side for costs. EMA crosses (2/10, 3/20, 5/30, 10/50, 20/100 days), plain momentum over 3 to 60 days, and Donchian breakouts from 3/1 up to 20/10 and 50/20, so basically the turtle rules. Every one of them plain, with vol targeting and with a sentiment filter, and also as a portfolio across all coins, plus a top 3 / top 5 momentum rotation. I trained on 2020-23, checked on 2024, and kept Jan 2025 to Aug 2026 untouched until the very end.
Honestly, trend was the best thing I found. EMA 3/20 on all coins had a Sharpe of 2.0 in training vs 1.4 for just holding, and a drawdown of -47% vs -82%. It still worked in 2024. Then in the untouched period it lost 35%. Holding the coins lost 67% and BTC 16%, so it cut the damage in half but didn't make money.
I also ran 69 standard trend/momentum indicators (MAs, SAR, SuperTrend, Ichimoku, ADX, MACD etc.) on 20 markets. On crypto 4h there's a real edge before costs, about 23 bp a trade, but fees eat almost all of it. Best combo was Donchian 20 + SMA 200 + SuperTrend, long only, 2 of 3 have to agree: Sharpe 0.51 vs 0.16 for holding in 2024-26 and half the drawdown. Nice as a risk filter, but the alpha isn't significant.
On forex, trend (4, 13 and 52 weeks) lost money after costs since 2016, same as what AQR's data shows.
What I didn't test: a proper CTA-style futures portfolio across commodities, bonds and indices, pyramiding, or discretionary trading. If you trade a specific rule, post it and I'll run it through the same test. Curious what comes out.
