Really good post. Setting the pass bar in advance is the bit most ORB backtests skip. I ran the "how people trade it" version on index CFD data with real spread: 9:30-9:45 range, first 15m close outside it before 11:30, stop on the other side, 2R target, flat at 16:00. \*\*Your window matches:\*\* Nasdaq 2019-2021 came out at PF 1.02 with a 47.3% win rate (about +0.015R a trade, close to your +$2.69 per $100). It lost at double spread. S&P PF 0.99, Dow PF 1.03. Basically zero, like you found. \*\*Earlier years are worse:\*\* 2014-2018 lost in every single year on all three (Nasdaq PF 0.75, S&P 0.76, Dow 0.86, about 1,200 trades each). \*\*The last 5 years are the one bright spot:\*\* Nasdaq 1,220 trades, PF 1.13, and it was still PF 1.22 on 6 months held back from tuning. But the Dow was PF 0.99 and the S&P 1.07 over the same years. So I'd read it the same way you did. The plain box isn't an edge. It does a bit better in the recent high-volatility Nasdaq years and gives it back in quieter ones. Holding every break to the close instead of a 2R target didn't change much either (PF 1.09). Out of the filters I tried, skipping the quietest days was the one that survived unseen data. Hi! My employer is switching from HealthEquity to Fidelity. Has anyone gotten a LMN for a Pilates studio membership and reimbursed themselves with their FSA through Fidelity with no issues? I have some issues like plantar fasciitis and high blood pressure and pre-diabetic, so I truly need to work out and Pilates is the only thing I’ve found to not hurt my PF. TIA!

biggest thing for me was writing the kill criteria before running the test, not after. like out of sample PF above X, at least N trades, still positive with costs doubled. if it fails, it's done, no "let me just try one more filter". that one rule saves months. the other filter is being able to say in one sentence who's on the other side losing money to you and why they keep doing it. if you can't, it's usually a pattern in noise. and check it across different years and a few related symbols, a real effect tends to show up weaker but in the same direction everywhere, a fake one flips around. for books, Aronson's Evidence-Based Technical Analysis is basically a whole book on data mining bias, really worth it for exactly this question

I trade FX and gold through MT5 EAs rather than stocks, so this is about process, not what to research. 1. Write the kill criteria down before you run the test. Something like "must survive 50% more costs, and still work when I nudge each parameter one step." If you decide after seeing the result, you'll always find a reason to keep going. 2. Compare the edge to your own simulation error. When I checked my Python sim against the real tester, it was about 0.13 PF too optimistic on one pair. If an idea's edge is smaller than that gap, it's not worth another week. 3. Cheap filters first. Add realistic spread and slippage and try a basket of instruments before any deeper work. Ideas with a thin gross edge usually die at the cost step, and that takes an hour instead of a month.
