$120k/year would be 0% income tax with the right mix of income sources. Married filing jointly gets $30k standard deduction and almost another $100k in 0% capital gains. When you sell investments you aren't taxed on the principal amount either so it's unlikely they would even have $120k income as they probably want to land under $86k MAGI for the 400% FPL subsidies for the ACA.
