It can work, and might be a good idea for health insurance coverage, where withdrawing from a brokerage account would generate capital gains income, and withdrawal from a taxable IRA would be regular income that might push your income past the 400% of the FPL and lose insurance subsidies. That can mean the difference between paying $400 a month and $1500 to $2000 a month.
