>You are ignoring the reality that large parts of the world do not have a transparent or free market.
There's at least 3 tiers of markets with definitions (FTSE and MSCI are some of the big names in international indexing, both have their own rules about how to determine which country goes where and sometimes a country can be developed for one and emerging for the other, like I believe South Korea is right now).
* Developed
* Emerging
* Frontier
At worst, I'd say your fears should only really apply to the bottom 2 categories. Emerging markets at market cap weight would only be around 10% of a portfolio, and that's split between several countries.
Then frontier markets are nearly investable - a few years ago I actually looked for funds that followed them, and since then both have closed (FM and EMFM).
>Do you really want your money in those markets?
There are a number of people that use US + developed ex-US only because they want to avoid the risk of emerging.
