Claude thinks most of Taalas' patents relate to DRAM/memory
Yes — arguably most of them are memory patents first and compute patents second. That's the whole point of the architecture: Taalas isn't building a better multiplier, it's building a storage medium dense enough that weights never have to move.
Directly memory-related, six of the nine:
* **20250029669** – Multibit High Density ROM Using Multiple Reference Biases. The core cell. Multiple bits per transistor stored as a conductivity state.
* **20260150278** – Mask Programmable ROM Using Shared Connections. How weights get written at fab, and why a model swap is two metal layers rather than a full tapeout.
* **20250028935** – Integrated Denoising Neural Network for High Density Memory. Error correction for the multi-value cells, using encoder/decoder networks rather than conventional ECC.
* **20250029671** – Integrated RAM Using Inverter Loops. The small on-die volatile store for KV cache and fine-tuned deltas.
* **20260057301** – Fine Tuning Model Parameters for Noisy Memory Cancellation. Training the model to compensate for its own memory's imprecision — a memory-quality patent disguised as a training-method patent.
* **20250123802 / 20250225198** – The Large Parameter Set accelerators sit on the boundary: readable cells that both store a parameter and select its product. Storage and compute in the same structure.
Only the model-core/fine-tuning-portion filing (20250238726) and the codebook pointers one (20260023566) are more architectural than memory-physical, and even the latter is about how a data structure is held.
For your purposes the read-through is the interesting part. Taalas is effectively claiming it can substitute mask-ROM density for HBM bandwidth. If that scales past 8B parameters, the marginal AI accelerator stops consuming HBM stacks and advanced packaging — which is a demand argument, not a WFE argument, since mask ROM at a mature-ish node needs far less exotic process than 3D-stacked DRAM.

That might be true if he used any actual cutting edge crypto. He did not.
He just used the at the time best building blocks that were publicly available. If he did it a few years earlier, he probably would have had to use DSA or RSA rather than ECC. But it is just a novel way to combining existing things. Signatures and hashes. Align incentives for participants. One of those concepts that seems so easy in hindsight.
Any undergrad in CS or math who took an interest in cryptography would have had this background.
