Honestly, it's somewhere in between but leaning more towards "potential" than "proven" right now. The numbers show over 100 entities registered in GIFT City by mid-2024, and yes the tax setup is genuinely attractive. 0% GST, 100% deduction under 80LA for 10 years, no STT, no CTT. On paper that's insane compared to mainland India's 30% flat tax on spot crypto.
But here's the thing. The IFSCA fintech sandbox only launched properly recently, and the RWA tokenization consultation paper came out just March 2025. They're talking about needing Rs 1 crore minimum for QIBs and $75,000 equivalent for accredited investors. That's not retail friendly at all.
What I find more interesting is entities operating outside GIFT City. Like Grade Capital runs a crypto derivatives fund from Gurugram, not GIFT City, and they're working with FIU-IND compliant on-ramp partners. Meanwhile 47% of traditional hedge funds globally are now in crypto according to PwC data.
The real action in India is still happening through registered exchanges and derivatives players, not GIFT City sandboxes. Give it 2-3 years before calling it a proper gateway tbh.
