I only day trade YM futures and have stuck with it pretty much every session for the past 8+ years. I invest in stocks too, but those are long-term holdings, so I don’t really consider that trading.
I landed on YM because NQ felt too violent for my style and ES felt a little too slow. YM was the middle ground that made sense to me—not necessarily better, just a better fit.
I also trade the same window every day, roughly 6:30–8:00 AM PT. After enough screen time, you start recognizing what normal movement looks like, when the price action is unusually clean, and when something just feels off and it’s better to sit out.
Honestly, I probably could’ve developed that same familiarity with another market if I’d committed to it for as long. A lot of traders would improve faster by picking one instrument, learning its personality, and repeating the same process instead of constantly jumping around.
That specialization eventually became the market I trade professionally as a registered CTA Commodity Trading Advisor, and I still haven’t felt much reason to switch.
