Young investor, special operations military vet, fellow student here
VOO SP500 are the same thing, QQQ is even more concentrated of stocks already within the SP500/VOO. I’m seeing a lot of overlap/risk here.
I think it’s best to focus on a mix of VTI/VXUS (or whatever the equivalent is for you). I was 100% VTI (every single US stock) now I’m slowly experimenting with some VXUS (every single stock in the world, excluding US).
I think I’m still around a 98:2 VTI/VXUS ratio as mid20s investor. I think I’m being aggressive with that allocation.
Also, military service is an investment. It’s not tangible upfront. You are entitled for VA compensation for reduced earning ability once you get out. Do the math on what you’d be getting passively each month into a hypothetical nest egg. It’s a lot.
The education benefits are amazing (VRE and GI Bill+MGI bill). Supreme Court+ current admin made a lot of changes in favor of the veteran, one example: you qualify for both GI Bill+ MGIBill in a single period of service. Also doors open with the veteran title.
20% is good. I’m closer to 40-50% and it doesn’t feel enough. Learning how to live a little over time\*
Once you get in, I think you’re stuck with BRS retirement plan due to your join period, I believe they match contributions up to a certain percent. Basically a 100% an instant return up to that maximum.
Feel free to add anything

I’m on the back side of my career, so I am on the high-3 retirement. The BRS retirement with matching is such a great benefit for younger guys. Especially for the guys who don’t make it to 20 years, it’s good to see them getting some contributions from the military towards their retirement regardless of their time in service.
