When you're older & the RMD's hit while you (and maybe spouse) receive SSA payments all of a sudden your tax brackets can be larger than you'd have thought. While that can increase your taxes it can also increase your healthcare costs because Medicare costs rise with your income (similar to the ACA) via IRMAA.
Also the more taxable income you have, the more of your SSA payments can be taxed.
So the thinking is, if you're going to have XX/YY ratio, you might as well put the bonds in your traditional IRA & let that grow slower. What's in most traditional IRA's isn't _yours_ until you pay the taxes on it. Versus that roth is beautiful tax free growth.
There are lots of discussions about the SSA tax hole/etc on the [forums](https://www.bogleheads.org). Knowing BH there's probably a wiki or a [tool](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Tools_and_calculators) that will do this math for you.
