I was curious and ran this through Claude - with weekly numbers over the last 40 years- to get values. It did a little digging to calculate market cap BUT the outcome was positive. Over the last 40 years the biggest stocks have been IBM, XON, GE, MSFT, AAPL, NVDA. Looking at rotations based on weekly closes, there were just over 100 trades, and it resulted in a 19.74% CAGR. Annualized volatility was 25.2%, sharpe at .84 and had a max drawdown of 47.4%. Weekly win rate vs the S&P was 52.6%.
Building in a rule to sell and park in cash at 3% (26.5% of total time invested over 40 years) if the stock falls below its 40 week MA, it pushes a 21.59% CAGR and a max drawdown of 20.6%.
The method is solid and would generally involve minimal oversight. But this has been a very strong 40 years and those winners were real. On the other end, GE and IBM lost a good amount riding the dot com bubble and black Monday, hence the MA stop.
