Well, I am not sure about market makers, but I respectfully disagree with your proposition that the most discussed companies in this sub are down 50%.

The real issue is that algorithms have been so much optimised that they only show you what you want to see. If you check about PYPL, they will show you only PYPL posts and filter out others. Also, when we scroll (me included), we pause at stocks that we are following and scroll past those that we are unfamiliar with (though they could be good opportunities).
Just sharing some examples of our posts from this sub.

We have posted so many times about REGN, which is now up over 30% since then.

Check this out- all five stocks in this list have gone up since January. CF 25.7%, DECK 14.5%, EOG 17.2%, PHM 19.4%, RMD 7.6%.

I am not claiming that all of our stocks have gone up, but the point is that it is not true that "the most discussed and recommended companies" in this sub have crashed.
