This shorter text will firstly describe parts of the brain and their functions that are relevant to traders, then account for ways in which people can influence or "trigger" the states of mind traders need.
The amygdala is to blame or praise for the rapid detection of emotional significance, especially threats, danger, or spectacular rewards.
Insula is a part of you that is a transcriber and translates bodily states like elevated heart rate or tension into "gut feeling" or into something emotional.
vmPFC (PFC is short for prefrontal cortex), and it will pick up on your emotional states and put them in the context of factual (or merely believed) causes and effects and make you inclined to make decisions before your conscious mind has grasped or processed them.
This is how a losing streak can make you abandon a functioning strategy and make people hesitate to push the trade button, or a winning streak can set you up with euphoria, and this increases risk-taking in the market. Both states have come at great cost to traders and made them lose and/or permanently quit.
Lastly we have the dlPFC, which is a part you should be keen on that it's superior the dominant, as a trader. It will be the "thing that's running the show" for profitable traders who can handles "cold" cognition such as working memory, planning, rule-following, deliberate impulse control. It's what lets you override a gut reaction with a reasoned one. This is the state you want dominant before executing a trade: rules-based, not reactive.
Furthermore, the dlPFC enables long-term thinking and helps align behavior with goals and plans.
When highly active, people tend to be thinking analytically, be more disciplined, be capable of overriding emotional impulses, and focus on a goal.
**How do you calm the amygdala and the emotional parts of the brain and/or activate the dlPFC and make it the primary input that informs your behavior when trading?**
A few things have scientific backing:
**Aerobic exercise**, but a minimum of 20-45 minutes at least every three days.
Mindfulness and/or **breathing exercises**. The physiological sigh is fascinating, as it can calm both the insula and the amygdala in as little as three rounds. Step one is a deep inhale through the nose followed by a second short inhale through the nose before exhaling to fully inflate the lungs, and lastly.
a long, slow exhale through the mouth.
Try it and practice mindfulness through focused awareness of the outcome. (Does it work for you as well?)
**Ice-cold water** on the face triggers the mammalian diving reflex, which in turn calms the bodily states.
The dlPFC will get activated if you do **cognitively** **difficult tasks**, learn new things, and/or memorize information. One of the simpler things I like to do is memorising words. You want 20 random words; that's a tad complex, perhaps like abstract nouns. Watch them for a minute and repeat as many of them as you can remember. Or you could set your mind on a cognitively challenging and practical task. Like learning how to build a vacuum cleaner, or why not a mechanically moving metal swan and clock, another household item you want homemade?
Hope you found this useful.
Thank you for reading this far.
