Most diesel isn’t made from cracking, but rather from distilling crude. For a refinery plant focussed on diesel production, a Crude unit will separate the oil by boiling point. Naphtha leaves for further processing and blending, the side cuts being distillates and diesel (both of ours are primarily diesel streams) are extracted, and the residual crude off the bottom of the crude tower is sent to a vacuum column, which is another fractionation column that runs at a vacuum, so more gas oils can be extracted. The vac bottoms is sent to the Coker. The vacuum gas oils is re-combined with the Crude dist and diesel, and sent as feedstock to the hydrogen desulphurization unit. There, it is heated, and injected with purified hydrogen, and passed over a hydrotreating reactor to remove sulphur and nitrogen compounds. This oil is then separated from the hydrogen stream, the H2S and Ammonia is removed. The oil is then re-fractionated into products. More naphtha is made as a byproduct of the hydrotreating reaction, the main diesel cuts are pulled from the side cuts, and the bottom of the HDS frac tower is just gas oil, and THAT gas oil is sent as feedstock to an FCCU for cracking into gasoline.
