How much time do you have? To give the full brief on this stock would take a day or longer, and I don't have enough time to do a full write up. I'll just give the briefest points and you can ask me questions if you'd like.
ASTS has built satellites with unique capabilities, so far no one has been able to replicate such and it's doubtful anyone will anytime soon. These satellites are LARGE. the size of half a basketball court, and they have a large FOV(Field of View) when passing over America the circumference is roughly a 1/3rd give or take and they have beam forming cells that can direct signals to and from regular handheld devices. It has many differentiators that make it better than any other option, the only competitor is Starlink and they started to compete after the fact buy acquiring a company called swarm and slapping their small fixed phased array to the bottom of their satellites. The company they acquired never had the capabilities or even the goal of doing what ASTS is doing. Starlink tried to beat ASTS to market and so far the reception has been. not great. spotty sometimes works texting, an image can be sent if you like waiting 5 minutes, no internet apps or other support. Due to the design of their satellite shell, it drains your battery by constantly reconnecting to a new sat every 5 seconds as they have limited field of view non beam forming and pass over much faster at a VERY low earth orbit.
Their backers are, Google, Firstnet, Fairwinds Technologies, ATT, American Tower, Verizon, Vodafone, Rakuten, and like 50+ other MNO's totaling 3.2 Billion subscribers. They are under 6 contracts with the DOD/Pentagon and only 2 of them are public knowledge. The satellites provide multiple uses, not only 5g speed broadband to devices but PNT/AMTI technology. Think extremely precise extremely powerful GPS. The government is very interested in a satellite that can both track friendly and enemy troops, provide connectivity to allies and jam/spoof enemies. There are likely use cases that will develop as this is an enabling technology innovators will be able to build off of.
How will they make money? The business model is one of the best i've seen. Wholesaler to the service provider. No brick and mortar stores, no sales team, no products or marketing or cell phones, just provide service to the partners and split profits. This makes Margins VERY fat. Also DoD/First responder revenue will be large. Ground stations get knocked out all the time in natural disasters and providing connectivity in a crisis is big money. MNO's have also talked about the cost savings of rural towers that make no money being turned off at night or decommissioned when this service can supplement saving MNO's hundreds of millions. Along with that the civilian use case will likely be a premium option at first, but once full service is available all MNO's will likely roll it into all their plans like they did with texting and internet over time in the 00's. Would you even notice a $2 increase in your bill? would you care if it meant you could check Instagram on a road trip or call help in an emergency or have some semblance of connection while traveling to another country? well $2 a month would yield in a 50/50 split $1 per month per user totaling $39 billion in revenue per year for those customers. Also to add all the devices we would like to add to a service like this. Children's Ipads, always on trackers, drones, there's a fair amount of potential. There's Golden Dome and other DOD pathways that are likely but I won't go into detail, just know the government is very interested in a tech that ASTS will provide and just signed a bill that allocated Billions to acquire said tech.
The bear case that Elon had Donald Trump's ear and would crush ASTS through regulatory pressure has been completely flipped, Elon is now out and it has slowly been developing that Brendan Carr, the head of the FCC, has made his greatest mission to expand cell service via satellites and spectrum, and recently on a podcast stated that that mission was specifically FOR said service, he then mentions ASTS only. ASTS recently acquired spectrum rights in June.
Through their tech, partnerships, and business model they are setting up a potentially massive profit generator that will be recurring and growing, and the barrier to entry for any competitor will be too high and difficult worth risking. If Starlink actually does get it together, there will still be a TAM large enough for a duopoly. But ask yourself why no ones working with Starlink and everyone is signing with ASTS.
