Generally just make the yearly contributions and buy a couple days later. No rhyme or reason to it, other than perhaps a lot of people buy on TFSA contribution day which might temporarily inflate the price.
I do have a small portfolio of swing trades though. Basically wait for an ETF to have an oversold RSI and oversold stochastics, with a positive DMI. The ADX has to indicate it's stuck trading in a range (less than 25 ADX). Also trading near at least 2 (500 day, 250 day, etc) support levels. If all those get green check marks ✅ then I buy in. Then I sell when they reverse or I double down if I have to (waiting for it to go lower and again reaches another oversold range). Over half the time I beat my baseline, which is VGRO. Most of the rest is still profitable, eventually, but doesn't necessarily beat VGRO.
A recent example was XEG which beat VGRO by 3% over the same 12 days.
All is tracked in a gnarly spreadsheet jammed full of macros and formulas. Spaghetti code at its finest.
