People and governments all around the world use US currency because the US market has historically been strong enough to create so much excess demand for US currency that it is functionally more liquid on ForEx markets than other currencies. Thus, it’s basically making trade slightly smoother. A collapse in the USD would just see another currency from a large, wealthy, consumer market take its place, likely the EUR or JPY in the short-term, and potentially the BRL or RMB in the long-term depending on those nations market growth.
