Current nuclear is based around water cooled designs dating back to the 50s and 60s. We've been iterating on 1st generation reactors that were largely picked for their ability to complement the production of nuclear weapons and submarine reactors.
The Gen IV reactors that are in the works with AEC will be significantly better than what we currently use. I'm personally very excited about molten salt based reactors, but there are a bunch of other designs with various pros and cons as well.
These new reactors are able to be built in factories, will have significantly smaller footprints and capital costs, dramatically improved safety, and will burn up far more of the fissile energy in the fuel itself (solid fuel reactors can burn maybe 2%). I'm really excited for what's coming.
