You weren’t kidding on the excruciating part. Cohen is such a fucking spoiled tool I was taking DOT listening to him

You're talking about security now, not decentralization.
You're right, DOT is also more vulnerable to attacks and to its security, more validator can get exploited, it's not great when it comes to security, but that's because it focused more on decentralization at the expense of security. That's why it's most decentralization than Ethereum.
Ethereum has learned to have stronger security, and is one of the strongest chains when it comes to security, but it came at the expense of decentralization and scaling.
L2 is always gonna be more centralized than when you go L0 or use parachain.

You’re correct that node count isn’t the be-all end-all of decentralization. But incorrect on what you think DOT brings to the conversation.
For example, on chain governance is a weakness not a strength, as Ethereum DeFi has shown time and again. It’s simply an avenue for malicious actors to exploit control. And if they get >51% of the votes, how do you stop them? Answer: You fork them out… which is off chain governance… ultimately making on chain governance pointless.
And by not doing any smart contract code on chain, you’re essentially kneecapping the biggest strength of blockchains which is decentralized trust. If the contract is off chain you’re reliant on a third party to make sure the code executed as expected. You can do the same thing as Eth which is basically run a layer 2 that checkpoints to layer 1, but not all code wants to run on an L2. Especially the important stuff. Because L2s tend to be waaaaaaaaay more centralized.
A decentralization metric you haven’t mentioned is client diversity. If the main DOT validator software has a vulnerability that gets exploited? How many nodes does it affect? I’d wager \~100%. On Ethereum there are like a dozen different node clients and no client has a majority.

There is actually real world use already and it is gaining huge traction, just now.
The problem with Polkadot is that many just focus on the DOT token and it's base layer statistics, governance and such. The real potential is in the various projects on its parachains, using the ecosystem, shared security and interoperability. This generates fees and usage, which makes the ecosystem even stronger.
Think PEAQ and their machine/robot ID, who have only just partnered with Doosan Robotics, a Korean giant in the field.

Obviously, the usual suspects in this sub will scream "$hitcoin", but that is because they're just looking at things from their speculative asset lense, comparing it to the performance of hyped meme cryptos ...

Nobody is waiting for any developments, they had plenty time and achieved no real usage while other chains exploded in adoption. Winner takes it all. And DOT is obviously not one of them.

Te time for theoretically used chains ended with the bull market of 2021. There is a reason why Cardano and Polkadot never even really pumped in 2024/25. It is all about adoption and real world usage. The time of theoretics its over. And meaninggul usge is what DOT never achieved...

Referendum #1944 on OpenGov, a proposal for dotUSD, a protocol-owned stablecoin starting with
USDT backing and later moving to DOT collateral, is in its final stretch of voting.
If you want to see where it stands or cast your own vote, SubWallet's OpenGov tab lets you
track and vote directly from the wallet, no separate governance app needed.
