Assuming 100% uptime and actually free electricity and you are pool mining (FPPS) but not taking into account any pool fees an Avalon Q running in eco mode, when Bitcoin is ~65K USD, earns about $1.75 a day in BTC. That's an ROI of ~24 months.

Are you watching ETH/BTC? because it just broke out. ETH also refused to make new lows in the 2022 bear market and was extremely resilient to BTC as it continued to drop. Even if BTC capitulates in Q4, ETH might not follow. It will also outperform BTC over the coming years due to macro risk turning for the first time since 2020.

if you’re retirement fund is under like 500k it really doesn’t matter if it’s all in BTC and that’s also not a retirement fund.

Yours is one of the few cases where investing in BTC actually makes sense. Stocks could be confiscated, and Ethiopia isn't known to be the most stable country in Africa unfortunately. BTC can't be taken from you, but in order to convert it back to fiat you might need to flee your country - which depending on your personal situation could either be an option or not, I don't really know.

Even with free electricity, mining today almost doesn’t rent. ASICs are expensive, depreciate quickly and the ROI is usually terrible. If you want to win BTC, it is usually better to buy it than to set up a mine.

Avoid UK like a plague....
In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) considers swapping one crypto asset for another (BTC -》USDT) a taxable disposal event. You will need to calculate any gain or loss in GBP at the exact moment of the trade.
But if you rally need to first you need to swap BTC to wBTC. And then, its simple to USDT....

Hey all. I’ve got some BTC in an IRA with Choice. I just got an email that they are shutting down their Blinko game (it was basically a fun version of a BTC faucet). Being in crypto for so long I see this as a red flag of their health especially seeing exchanges going under already. I know I should have it in cold storage but I parked it here for tax purposes. Should I be concerned about email and any suggestions to limit a tax hit? Just roll it to another IRA?

This sounds like sarcasm, but most of us will never even see 3 BTC in their life. I do the same with stocks in my portfolio, routinely sell them for a loss, it’s like I don’t even care anymore

Hey everyone,
I'm a solo developer and Bitcoin Maxi, and I built Compass after being frustrated with two things: my own spending habits and how other personal finance don't factor it in net worth/spending.
I've always seen USD as kinda worthless and I tend to spend it almost with ease versus when I see Bitcoin. Also, apps like Rocket Money didn't make it easy for me to truly track my Bitcoin holdings since you have to enter the value manually and with Bitcoin that number of course changes. I wanted something that allowed me to see the true value in BTC in my spending habits to help me slow down and something that Bitcoiners were complaining about in other finance apps where you have to babysit the balance of your Bitcoin wallet.
So I built the thing they and myself actually wanted.
**Better**
Compass just knows. Your net worth, your spending, and your goals are all priced in Bitcoin by default, and the Bitcoin part updates itself. You never type a balance again. Expenses from years ago use the price that Bitcoin was then and it's always up to date with current day prices for today when it comes to measuring.
**A few things I tried hard to get right:**
Your Bitcoin balance updates on its own. **YOU NEVER HAVE TO ENTER ANY PRIVATE KEY** and I knew that **security was a huge thing when working on the app.** You can either just enter the manual balance or the public read only address and it just watches and auto updates the balance. This gives me more accuracy when checking my balance.
Every purchase shows up in sats. For example, A $47 dinner lands as 73,194 sats or $2500 in rent is 3,893,293 sats / 0.4 BTC. Four categories: Bitcoin, Necessary, Discretionary, and Wasteful to easily categorize your spending. You have to spend money. Rent, groceries, kids. The point of holding Bitcoin was never to die with it. So instead of guilt, every purchase just shows you what it did to your goal's completion date. So like if your goal is to get to 1 BTC and you're spending a lot in wasteful, it will show you how many days you are behind to your goal.
**Technical:**
I made the app available on mobile, web, and desktop. **The desktop app has no account and no server. Nothing to sign up for, everything encrypted on your own machine.** This is what most people have liked but you have the option to look at it on all devices with sync which is still encrypted in DB. I've also opened source the compass-core that runs the app for the encryption, xpub, and conversions. Linked it in this post
**Cost:**
I'm doing a current deal right now for just $60 one time purchase for LIFETIME. You can pay in Bitcoin or USD. I think if we want to drive adoption of Bitcoin, I think it's important we start actually using it and this is your chance to as well. There is a 30 day money back guarantee no questions asked if you're interested!
I'd genuinely love your feedback, especially if you've been stacking for a while and have quietly given up on your finance app ever understanding it: long-time holders, self-custody people, anyone who already converts prices to sats in their head. Tell me what's missing or what feels clunky. I read every comment.
Thanks for reading, and I really appreciate any thoughts.

I have a friend who doesn’t work, his wife is a Chief Marketing Officer for a publicly traded company. Their retirement accounts are professionally managed by a wealth manager.
In 2018 they bought a house for $805,000.
They recently sold that house and bought a $2M house.
He owns 0.45 BTC. He was complaining Bitcoin is garbage it hasn’t done anything.
Worth noting, his wife wants to buy more Bitcoin.
I told him to zoom out and be patient. I then shared with him If he bought $805,000 worth of Bitcoin when he bought the house back in 2018, he’d be sitting on $8M (126 bitcoin, was $6300 then). Zoom out!
Does this mean in 8 years from now it will have identical results? No. But I believe we will be much higher than now.
I’m sure people thought those who said 1 Bitcoin could buy a Mercedes in the future were crazy too…until it happened.

Most long-term holders I've seen fall into one of three camps, and which one fits depends on what "retirement" actually means to you here.
Camp one: never sell, because they view bitcoin itself as the retirement plan, not a slice of one. Camp two: rebalance with new contributions only, directing future paychecks into other assets rather than selling BTC, so they avoid a taxable event and let the winner keep running. Camp three: set a hard percentage band (say, "if BTC ever exceeds 70% of net worth, trim back to 60%") and mechanically execute it regardless of feelings, precisely because "I'll decide when it feels right" is how people end up never selling and never diversifying either.
The one thing worth checking regardless of camp: is that Bitcoin actually in self-custody? A lot of people obsess over the allocation question while the coins are still sitting on an exchange or in a custodial retirement wrapper, which is a bigger risk than being "too concentrated."

This is only my third bitcoin cycle; so I’m new to BTC. I was a hodler, but now I know better. taking profits in fiat, which allows me to buy more BTC exposure if I so choose to do so, makes more sense for me. This last downturn I capitulated. I sold almost all of my bitcoin exposure in tranches, I hold zero bitcoins now, and only have a few bitcoins worth of exposure sitting in ETFs in a tax advantaged account ( I know NYKNC). I took life changing profits, and at the same time, I left life changing profits on the table because of my conviction.
The fiat mindset: how many people are actually buying stuff using BTC? How much of your daily purchases do you do in BTC? It’s an honest question.

In terms of the number of wallets holding 0.1 BTC, that's something rare. These are statistics without any consideration of dollar value.

People will lost interest in BTC once money as a whole moves on chain . BTC needs an intermediary to do anything interesting, unless you jump through tons of hoops or are dealing with a very complex programmed environment.
