Profile
Astar Network is a smart contract hub leveraged by decentralized apps (dApps) in the Web 3.0 ecosystem, with support for both EVM and WASM virtual machines. Astar is a scalable platform used by dApp developers to lower costs and improve interoperability, including via the use of Layer 2 features such as Plasma and zero-knowledge rollups. Astar also features cross-chain interoperability underpinned by Polkadot. Founded in 2019 by Sota Watanabe (then called Plasm), Astar is maintained by Stake Technologies and has now become a leading Polkadot parachain by various measures. The project's native token, ASTR, is a utility token used for various purposes including network fees, staking, and dApp staking. Astar Network architecture has two layers. The base layer is a layer-1 blockchain built using the Substrate blockchain framework. Astar's second layer is a scaling solution created using a fork of the Optimistic Virtual Machine (OVM) invented by the Plasma Group. The OVM module available on Astar allows developers to customize their scaling design. Projects can plug their application layers into Astar's base layer using Plasma or rollups types like optimistic or zero-knowledge (ZK) rollups. Any layer-2 solution on Astar stores data and commits state transitions periodically on Astar's layer-1 chain. The base layer built using Substrate will be a parachain that connects to the Polkadot Relay Chain. Astar will feature support for both Substrates native WebAssembly VM and an EVM module to support smart contracts written in Solidity or Vyper. Astar Network will also feature a so-called X-VM (Cross Virtual Machine) that will aim to make the two VMs on the network interactive. Eventually, Solidity smart contracts on Astar's EVM module will be able to call ink! smart contracts the network's WebAssembly module seamlessly. The core features of Astar Network are: Dapp Staking - A reward system for applications developers. It is a blockchain-specific monetization model for Web3.0. 50% of Astar Network's staking reward goes to application developers who have built applications on the network. Astar allows the assignment of a smart contract administrator, called an "operator," who can be "Nominated" by users (simply called "Nominators"). Operator Trading - Another feature that will allow "Operators" to earn rewards. A developer may want to assign an operator for chain maintenance and administration or other various use cases. Operators will give their rights to opponents who give a value that seems reasonable to the value given to them. Those who have been granted the rights of the operators can receive the buyout. This mechanism assumes that new off-chain markets will be created. Both Dapp Staking and Operator Trading will be part of Astar's layer-1 architecture and will be facilitated to call the network's OVM modules.
