Hi everyone! I’m a beginner trader learning day trading / momentum trading. I analyze charts on TradingView and execute demo trades on ThinkTrader, while logging everything in a custom spreadsheet on LibreOffice Calc.
My trades usually last anywhere from a few minutes to 30 minutes, and up to 1 hour depending on market conditions. I focus exclusively on the **QQQ ETF (5-minute timeframe)** during the NYC open (15:30 CET), using a **modified 15-minute Opening Range Breakout (ORB)** strategy. To avoid fakeouts, my variation requires waiting for a second candle of the same color with high volume outside the range before considering an entry.
**Current progress:** I've only taken a small sample of live demo trades so far and I'm currently running backtests, so my sample size is still quite small. My main goal is to refine this system, build consistency, and prepare for my first Prop Firm challenge.
# MY TRADING CHECKLIST
# PRE-MARKET (15:15 - 15:25 CET)
1. **Economic Calendar:** Check high-impact news (3-star / red folder ⭐⭐⭐). If released at 15:30, stay hands-off until 15:40.
2. **News:** Quick scan for any breaking news on the asset.
3. **Higher Timeframe Trend (15m):** Is price above or below VWAP? Always trade with the trend.
4. **Chart Setup:** Get charts prepped and ready for the market open.
# EXECUTION & ACTION (15:30 onwards)
1. **15m ORB Marking:** At 15:45, switch to the 15-minute timeframe and mark the exact High and Low of the 15:30 opening candle. Immediately switch back to the 5-minute chart to execute.
2. **Entry Logic (5m):** Operating window: 15:35 – 17:30 CET. No trading on Fridays.
* **Standard Breakout Execution:** Enter 5 seconds before the confirmation candle closes outside the range.
* **Weak/Small Candle:** Wait for the candle closure or the next candle (require 2 confirmations of the same color outside the breakout level).
* **Indecision or Candle Touching the Line:** DO NOT ENTER.
* ⚠️ **GIANT CANDLE FILTER:** If the breakout candle is overextended, the daily move has already been exhausted. DO NOT ENTER—momentum is gone and a retracement is likely.
* ⚠️ **OVERSIZED STOP CANDLE:** If the stop loss candle is overextended (+$2), setting the SL above/below it ruins the Risk:Reward ratio. DO NOT ENTER.
3. **ETF/Index Correlation Filter:** Must align with the asset’s trend. If market trend is conflicting or uncertain, DO NOT ENTER.
4. **Risk Verification:** Calculate the Stop Loss. If the required stop is too wide and ruins the Risk:Reward ratio (minimum required 1:0.75), DO NOT ENTER.
5. **Order Placement:** If all conditions are met, place the order.
* **Stop Loss Placement:** Place SL below the low/above the high of the previous candle. Use a wide $0.10 buffer (much larger than standard 2–3 cents) to give the trade breathing room against open-market noise.
* ⚠️ **WIDE STOP RULE:** If the previous candle is too large and the wide buffer makes the Stop Loss ridiculously far away, NEVER ENTER.
6. **Trade Management:** Take 50% partial profits around halfway to target and move Stop Loss to Breakeven (BE).
# SURVIVAL RULES
1. **Cutoff Time:** No new trades after 17:00 CET.
2. **Trade Limit:** Max 1 trade per day (win or loss), then close the platform.
3. **Daily Loss Limit:** If down -2% of total capital, shut down immediately.
4. **No Revenge Trading:** After taking a stop loss, step away from the mouse for at least 5 minutes.

Regulating my nervous system was the hardest part for me.
Before:
While in winning trades I would sell early.
And I would hold losing ones for too long.
