Everyone else has summed up a lot of options-particularly if you wanted noncovered call etfs with qualified dividends(if you are in the States). While I can't say what are "good ETFs" I hopefully can share whatever I've found so far.
If total return through distribution-alternatives is what you want, there are funds like DIVB, SYLD and WTV which are based on dividends and shareholder buybacks(shareholder yield). I love WTV and have DGRO but I'm contemplating into whether I'd like to replace DGRO with DIVB. MYLD is also what I'm looking into.
If you want to have higher than 5% yield and you don't mind paying taxes, CLO etfs in the BBB range could be a good supplement to preferred shares and the other etfs mentioned. I like CLOZ just because they donate part of their proceeds to a local community but it's yield isn't as good as other CLO etfs such as CLOA and CLOB or JAAA and JBBB.
Alternatively to CLO etfs, you can find active ETFs in bonds. I like FOXY and ILS as they don't seem to be dependent on stocks. Vanguard, Simplify, Statestreet, blackrock, Nuveen, Wisdomtree and others have a few active income etfs one can look into. (Vanguards new active etfs may be the most cost effective way going forward but there's little aside faith in the fund managers that can point to their effectiveness.)
There are ETFs like CEFS, which are etfs of closed end funds where they give a portion of their monthly distributions, and they reinvest the rest.
Finally, I've been looking into etfs in REITS. REIT and HOMZ are recent etfs that I've been introduced to. I've been dreaming of using these types of etfs to improve cashflow with some nominal growth.
