I did some research by pulling an ETF list of Bond ETFs from US News Money and pulling return data from the Alpha Vantage API. I then calculated Trailing Twelve Month (TTM) Total Return and Trailing Five Year (TFY) Total Return and sorted my results. Below is the April update for the top 60 (out of 107).
I selected six different bond types from US News Money, Long, Intermediate Core, Intermediate Core-Plus, Short, Ultrashort, and High Yield. The top funds are as follows
Long - VCLT (Vanguard Long-Term Corporate Bd)
Intermediate Core - HTAB (Hartford Schroders Tax-Aware Bond)
Intermediate Core-Plus - BYLD (iShares Yield Optimized Bond)
Short - DRSK (Aptus Defined Risk)
Ultrashort - FLTR (VanEck IG Floating Rate)
High Yield - FALN (iShares Fallen Angels USD Bond)
For Long-Term, the real winner was LOKR, but that was because of an abnormally high payment of $1.25 in Dec ‘21 raising their total return, so I made the winner VCLT. ;-)
Readers may be looking for BND (Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF). The ETF came in 57th place, but 7th for Intermediate Core.
I thought I would share the data. Please note that the TFY Numbers are not annualized.
The data from US News is a bit buggy. If I'm missing something, please let me know, and I'm happy to research.
