Ashoka Buildcon Emerges L1 for ₹866 Cr Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway Package; Order Book Stands at ₹15,964 Cr

India's infrastructure push is no longer just about roads. Highways still get the headlines, but power transmission, railway electrification and tunnel work are becoming just as important for contractors. Builders who work across these segments, and hold projects that earn over many years, are better placed to ride out the swings of any single sector.
The Nifty 50 was trading at 24,596.10, up 0.24%. Meanwhile, Sensex also rose 0.47% to 79,684.88 on Friday. What's the news
Ashoka Buildcon has been declared the lowest bidder (L1) for a balance-work package on the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway in Gujarat. The job is an 8-lane, access-controlled stretch of about 26.6 km between Karvad and Jujuwa, to be built in EPC mode within 18 months. A final award is still to come, and the contract carries a ten-year defect liability period.
The company also picked up several other mandates. REC Power Development issued a letter of intent for a high-voltage substation at Sakoli in Maharashtra, which Ashoka will build in 24 months and maintain for 35 years. It has bought the project SPV for this, and Rail Vikas Nigam and North Eastern Railway have given it electrical work on tunnels and traction substations. Separately, its Tumkur-Shivamogga highway projects in Karnataka received commercial operation dates.
Financial & Business analysis
Looking at the quarterly results of Ashoka Buildcon, the company's consolidated revenue from operations decreased by 18.72 percent YoY, from Rs. 1,851.18 crore in Q2 FY26 to Rs. 1,504.62 crore in Q2 FY27, and increased by 0.34 percent QoQ from Rs. 1,499.60 crore in Q1 FY27.
In Q2 FY27 Ashoka Buildcon consolidated net profit turned negative, reaching Rs. (118.96) crore compared to Rs. 90.69 crore during the same period last year. As compared to Q1 FY27, the net profit turned negative, from Rs. 127.17 crore. The basic earnings per share stood at Rs. (4.23) as against Rs. 2.78 recorded in the same quarter in the previous year, FY2026.
The order book tells the story of a company that has stopped relying on one segment. Road EPC is still the largest block at close to 39%, but power transmission now makes up nearly a quarter, with SPV projects, railways and annuity roads each adding their own share. Building work is the smallest slice. This mix means a slowdown in highway awards won't hurt as badly as it once might have.
The new wins push further in that direction, especially in power and rail, where work is more specialised and competition is thinner. The Sakoli substation adds a long-term annuity-style stream, which smooths out the lumpiness of construction income. The Gujarat expressway keeps the road team busy, and the commissioned Karnataka stretches should free up equipment and people for fresh sites.
Industry context
The scale of the company's pipeline shows how wide the opportunity has become. Its order book of about ₹15,964 crore is spread across six segments, and the Gujarat package alone is a 26.6 km expressway to be finished in 18 months. Add a 35-year substation contract and tunnel electrical work due in 30 months, and the work stretches well into the next few years.
Ashoka's reach backs this up. It has run or is running 41 PPP projects across more than 20 states, and its Karnataka highway stretches were commissioned spanning more than 45 km. Contractors with this kind of track record tend to be shortlisted early for the next round of large awards.
