In a non-registered account, I'd like to simulate a target-date fund glide path with ETFs, starting off with 100% stocks and slowly increasing bonds approaching the target date. No selling when rebalancing to prevent taxable capital gains.
Would it be better and easier to do it and rebalance with asset allocation ETFs, or with their underlying holdings? For example with Vanguard, which is better:
1. Buy VEQT, then buy VGRO, then buy VBAL, then buy VCNS, then buy VCIP (has overlap, harder to rebalance)
2. Buy VUN + VCN + VIU + VEE, then buy VAB + VBG + VBU (no overlap, easier to rebalance)
