Violation of international law? Didn't they put out an arrest warrant on the prime minister of Israel because he had the gall to defend himself? Didn't they perpetuate the genocide hoax, even though that's been debunked continuously?

Fuck thie UN.

You're talking about people who go to war without letting the UN, their own Congress, know, and you're mentioning dictators, but you're not putting 2 and 2 together

Is it better to be feared or loved, Trump clearly believes in fear as a primary tactic to bend nations to his will. Not sure how this story ends, but being sanctioned by the UN is probable.

Saddam switched from the petrodollar to the euro and made a lot of money selling Iraq’s oil in the euro. Three years later, Saddam was dead.
The Guardian on 16 Feb 2003:
”A bizarre political statement by Saddam Hussein has earned Iraq a windfall of hundreds of million of euros. In October 2000 Iraq insisted on dumping the US dollar - 'the currency of the enemy' - for the more multilateral euro.
…
Almost all of Iraq's oil exports under the United Nations oil-for-food programme have been paid in euros since 2001. Around 26 billion euros (£17.4bn) has been paid for 3.3 billion barrels of oil into an escrow account in New York.
The Iraqi account, held at BNP Paribas, has also been earning a higher rate of interest in euros than it would have in dollars.
At the time of the change the UN issued a report saying that the move could cost Iraq up to £270 million. Independent experts questioned the value of buying into a plummeting currency.
'It was seen as economically bad because the entire global oil trade is conducted in dollars,' says Fadhil Chalabi, executive director of the Centre for Global Energy Studies.
The marked appreciation of the euro, higher interest rates, and the ability to pay mainly European suppliers in euros is believed to have made hundreds of millions for the Iraqi oil-for-food programme.
UN officials insist that this benefit helps to pay for humanitarian aid, war reparations, and the cost of weapons inspectors.”

No one is questioning if Maduro is a dictator, certainly not me. This is about what trump did, he violated the UN charter, International law and the sovereignty of Venezuela. Without any notification to congress, certainly no approval from congress, so he acted on his own, as a DICTATOR does. It's not complicated. The House and the Senate abdicated all their power to trump, and the Supreme Court is crooked and lets trump break the law and the Constitution. There is no oversight over trump, he does whatever wants. That is a DICTATORSHIP, rule by one, unquestioned authority, just like Venezuela. We are a DICTATORSHIP now. trump is a DICTATOR.

So… you wouldn’t sell Texas to Mexico or California to Canada but the Dutch absolutely should sellout the Greenlanders?
I’d say no offence but it’d be disingenuous. If you think that your personal security supersedes that of the greater world, you’re the problem.
I’ll reiterate again, the only country that poses a risk to Greenland (amongst other independent nations in the western hemisphere) is currently American aggression. Take your head out of the stars and look and what is already in front of you. Greenland is protected by NATO in addition to the Dutch directly. Nobody threatened Greenland in a credible way my entire life until now. The US always has had and continues to have strategic access to Greenland. This isn’t about security and entirely about minerals and oils.
All that stuff you said about Russia and china was adorable. You realize that America now votes with them (and North Korea) at the UN now, correct? It’s clear what side America is on and any sane nation that can is creating as much distance as possible.

Really stupid question here, but if the US actually follows up on “annexing” countries, especially ones in the UN, and continues to try and flex its military power, how much would world reserve currency continue to matter to them?

> History since WWII is filled with violations of the “rules based order”, from coups across the globe to the Iraq war to the Russian war in Ukraine.
No. It hasn't. The Iraq war was distinctly different from the Ukraine war. The Iraq war came about with UN resolutions. That's international law. The Ukraine war did not.
> What do you imagine has changed?
Because now we are like Russia. At least we tried to be different by getting UN resolutions and allies. We don't anymore. We are exactly like Russia. That's how. And our allies have noticed. Now our *closest* allies consider us the bad guys. If not in the majority in the plurality.

Their self determination was removed long prior to Trump. 8-9 million people don't leave the country due to their deep satisfaction. That said this has laid bare that there is no "international law" if there ever was. UN? ICC? None of them matter.

Without the Venezuelan oil Cuba faces a severe humanitarian disaster. How the world completely abandoned this country for so many decades is beyond comprehension. The UN and the ICC complicit with the Castros; the head of human rights of the UN even labeling the war criminal Fidel as a champion of civil rights 🙈

What happened with Venezuela is something that hasn't happened since the end of WWII. Before, there were aggressive imperialist actions done to decapitate smaller states but there was an attempt to build a coalition or consensus through the UN or other quasi-international partnerships.
That might not seem like much, but that model was keeping at bay the idea that superpowers could build their own super states disconnected from the international community. It's why China is skirting around Taiwan instead of going in directly. It's why Russia hasn't launched an all out assault, up to and including using nukes in Ukraine in order to assert power over them.
Trump demonstrated that the new order is simply might over diplomacy, and being direct in aims like resource taking. It sets the stage for the US to actually make good, militarily, on the threats toward Greenland, Cuba, Mexico and whoever else neighbors us. This is how empires were run in the mercantilist age. What makes now distinct and has shifted us into uncharted territories are the technological development that have happened in weaponry, which can be world ending in a way that cannons and bayonets were not.
