REITs = Real Estate Investment Trusts. Basically you are buying shares of a stock that owns real estate, usually rental real estate.
A couple interesting ones (these are stock tickers on the US markets, if you look them up)…
- SPG Simon Property Group owns malls
- ACC American Campus Communities owns rental apartments in college towns
- O Realty Income Corp does triple net leases, their big one being the stores for Dollar Tree
- DLR Digital Realty owns data centers
- AMT American Tower owns telecommunications infrastructure
- APTS Apartments is a general apartment building REIT
- DEA Easterly Corp rents their office buildings to government agencies
- ADC Agree Realty owns facilities for auto parts stores
There are pro’s and con’s in terms of tax efficiency, dividends, etc. but a good way to put part of your portfolio in real estate, especially if you do not yet own a home or have other real property investments.
