Thanks! Basically I see genetics becoming a larger and larger aspect of healthcare. Years from now, it would not surprise me if when you go to the doctor if genetic testing becomes an aspect of a physical and part of your medical record. Additionally, industries within the broader theme continue to grow: consumer genomics (23/me, Ancestry, Illumina spin-off Helix), precision oncology (Guardant, Illumina spin-off Grail, Foundation - which I owned but was bought by Roche, and Illumina is also working with Loxo) and you look at many of these companies like Foundation and Guardant and others and what is the common thread? That they use Illumina equipment - and in the case of Grail/Helix, were spun off of Illumina. Helix is trying to become the app store for genetics. Invitae (NVTA) also uses Illumina machines as far as I'm aware, as does Genomic Health (GHDX).
Recent IPO Twist Bioscience - which has doubled in a little over a month since IPOing in October - counts Illumina as an investor and they buy Illumina products. As more and more new companies and sub-sectors grow under this broader theme, Illumina remains the 800 pound gorilla in this space, mainly as a supplier but also in some cases as an investor. Illumina (which just purchased Pacific Bioscience) is not without any competition, but the market share they enjoy is enormous.
And really, I think the other aspect that appeals to me is the aspect that appeals to me so much in regards to life science companies in general: I sell you the machine and then I sell you consumables again and again and again and again and again. Recent Illumina conference calls have highlighted how strong consumables sales have been.
And really, I'm fascinated by the innovation that is going on in science today, so companies that supply to science (Thermo Fisher, etc) work from the standpoint of having a thesis/liking the nature of the business and on a level of considerable personal interest.
