Of course, I am happy to explain the math. It is not so complicated, it is like putting together a puzzle, piece by piece, to see the big picture.
Here is how I add up all the parts of the company to get to the $110 number.
First, we look at the businesses that make money every day.
* The TV Business (DISH and Sling): This part is old, yes, but it is still a very good cash machine. It makes a lot of profit. Because it is getting smaller over time, we cannot give it a super high value. But based on its profits, this part is worth about $9.8 billion.
* The Phone Business (Boost Mobile): This part is changing. Before, it was losing a lot of money because they were trying to build a huge, expensive network. Now, that plan is stopped. It will be a much simpler business, and it has the special deal with SpaceX. Because it was losing money, we cannot look at profits. So we look at how much money it makes in sales. Based on its sales, this part is worth about $2.8 billion.
* The Internet Business (Hughes): This is a very steady business. It sells internet to the government and other big companies. It is a good, solid piece of the company. This part is worth about $2.0 billion.
Next, we look at the special treasures the company now has.
* The Piece of SpaceX: This is the very exciting part. They got an $8.5 billion piece of SpaceX. But, because you cannot sell these shares on the stock market tomorrow, it is fair to say it is worth a little less for now. It is like having a winning lottery ticket you cannot cash for some time. So, I take a small discount, and I say this piece is worth about $6.4 billion.
* The Extra Phone Highways (Spectrum): Remember, they sold a lot, but not all! They still have a very valuable piece left. Big banks that study this company say this extra piece could be sold for about $9.9 billion.
* The Cash: After they get all the money from AT&T and SpaceX, they can pay off all their big debts. And after all the bills are paid, they will still have about $6.6 billion in cash just sitting in the bank.
Now, we just do the simple math.
We add all the pieces together:
$9.8B (TV) + $2.8B (Phone) + $2.0B (Internet) + $6.4B (SpaceX) + $9.9B (Extra Highways) + $6.6B (Cash) = $37.5 billion.
This is the value of all the good parts. But, we must be fair. A big company has costs to run the main office, so we take a very small amount off for that. Also, sometimes when one company owns many different types of businesses, the market gives it a small discount. It is like buying a big bag of mixed candy; it can be a little cheaper than buying each candy alone.
After we take off these small discounts, the total value for the company is about $31.8 billion.
The last step is to find the price for one share.
We take that big number, $31.8 billion, and we divide it by all the shares of the company that people own. There are about 288 million shares.
So, $31.8 billion divided by 288 million shares equals about $110 per share.
This is how I get to the $110 number. It is just adding up all the pieces of the puzzle to see the full picture. And this picture looks much bigger than what the stock market price is showing today.
