Mark Miller knows what he’s doing and CSU is too large to be super affected by ML departure. I made this list so I can calm myself down when every 30 min panic sets in :)
Mark Miller's career progression and values:
Career Progression
Mark Miller earned a Bachelor of Science in statistics and mathematics from McMaster University, where he also took computer science courses.
He began his career as a software developer and worked for a government research hub, the Canada Centre for Inland Waters, where he developed a love for coding on mainframe computers and saw the power of large-scale data analysis
Miller's first job after university was at SAGE, a software provider for transit agencies.
After SAGE was acquired and the culture changed, he left and co-founded Trapeze Group in 1995 with Ian Keaveny, a co-founder from SAGE. They built the business from the ground up, focusing on organic growth and working closely with clients to understand their needs
Trapeze Group became the first company ever acquired by Mark Leonard's Constellation Software in July 1995
Miller continued as the CEO of Trapeze Group after the acquisition
His ambition led him to take on the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Constellation Software in 2001. In 2011, he became the CEO of Volaris Group, an operating group of Constellation. Under his leadership, Volaris acquired over 200 companies by 2023
As part of his progression, he has taken on numerous leadership roles. He is the Executive Chairman of Trapeze and the Volaris Operating Group. Additionally, he serves on the board of Lumine Group (Constellation's telecom-focused division), tech incubator ventureLAB, and other software companies like Computer Modeling Group and IOVIA
Leadership and Values
Miller is a strong proponent of a highly decentralized model, a hallmark of both Constellation and Volaris. He believes that smaller, focused business units allow leaders to better serve specific customer needs and provide emerging leaders with the autonomy to make independent decisions
He has a passion for developing leaders and helping them build long-term careers within the company. He encourages employees to be constantly learning and has championed talent development programs like peer-to-peer sessions and "Volaris 101" to share best practices
Despite leading a global, decentralized organization, Miller devotes significant time to getting to know people, frequently visiting business leaders worldwide for one-on-one conversations about their challenges
With a background in building a company from the ground up, he maintains an entrepreneurial spirit. He pushes leaders to "think big" and consider what their businesses could look like in five years, encouraging them to capture more market share or expand into new areas
His approach is rooted in practical application and solving real customer problems. When considering AI, for example, he emphasized prioritizing investments that meet a clear customer need rather than creating "a solution in search of a problem"
Having worked with Mark Leonard for over 30 years, Miller is seen as a trusted adviser and a driving force within the executive leadership. Analysts and company executives do not foresee him making material changes that would depart from Leonard’s successful vision and strategy
