The company's bottom line totaled $424.5 million, or $0.74 per share. This compares with $123.7 million, or $0.20 per share, in last year's third quarter.

Excluding items, Albertsons Companies, Inc. reported adjusted earnings of $457.2 million or $0.79 per share for the period.

Analysts on average had expected the company to earn $0.59 per share, according to figures compiled by Thomson Reuters. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

The company's revenue for the quarter rose 8.4% to $16.7 billion from $15.4 billion last year.
